Converting redundant farm buildings into family homes
This conversion project of a redundant list farm collection of buildings was situated in Banstead, Surrey to create several family homes of outstanding character.
This was one of Peter’s passion projects, having years of experience with oak frame historic buildings and previous awards. Through the development of this building Peter was retained to ensure all the materials and methods adhered to his vision and expectation. He selected the timbers from various sources around the country. Peter navigated all the conservation issues related to these listed farm buildings. Whilst retaining the natural rural charm, the conversion incorporated some very high tech engineering solutions, which are also undetectable eliminating signs of disturbance or intervention with the historic fabric. Even the staircases were constructed on-site from the remaining timber beams.
This building appears to sit on historic standals stones raising the barn floor off the ground, although the weight of the building is taken by a hidden support, positioned out of sight and the whole barn canterleavers from this. Peter designed the structural solutions and had his structural engineer verify all the loadings to satisfy building control. One of the key features was to retain the working sliding barn doors that use the original runners and pulleys that were restored by local craftsmen. The property features a central and revolving stove as well as underfloor heating with glass balustrading in order to showcase the original timber frame without distraction.
Peter has worked for two generations of this family and still has ongoing involvement with the evolution of the farm buildings.
